Who we are
The Minersville Area Historical Society is a 501c(3) non-profit located in the Borough of Minersville, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania. The mission of the Society is to serve the public through education and historic preservation. The Society achieves this mission by providing educational events, research opportunities, and public access to a vast collection of historical resources that depict the collective history of the area.
In 2006, Dora Santarelli inspired the founding of the Minersville Area Historical Society and gained the enthusiastic support of Charter Members Joseph Anthony, Jack Flynn, M. Irvil Kear, Barbara Graf, Robert E. Kimmel, David McSurdy, Joseph Slovick, Tom Symons, Sr., Francis Burke, Loretta Flynn, Anne Hahn, Jack Kline, Megan Paul, Colleen Slovick, James Stutz, and Vincent Land. These dedicated volunteers saw the need for a repository for archives, artifacts, and photos that collectively represent the rich and varied history of Minersville, the surrounding area, and the Anthracite Region.
For the first ten years of its existence, this growing collection was housed in the basement of various churches in the town. In 2016, the Society got a home of its own, the Thomas Asenavage Memorial Building at 100 S. Third St., Minersville, which was presented to the Society by Thomas Asenavage’s nephew, William H. Agnew.
The Asenavage Building, commonly referred to as the History House, now boasts a museum on the first floor as well as archive storage, a research and meeting room, and the Society’s office on the second floor. The History House is open on Wednesdays, 11:00 am - 4:00 pm and by appointment.
Monthly business meetings are held the last Monday of the month at 6:00 pm. Open Houses and Speaker Series Programs are scheduled from September through May. Please see our Calendar for specific days and times.
